About Miriam's House

Miriam's House, named for the sister of Moses and Aaron who rescued Moses from the bulrushes, opened in January 1994. Located in the pleasant and venerable Rivermont residential area, this beautiful facility provides a communal living experience in a homelike atmosphere. Mothers and their children occupy 11 private bedrooms/units with shared baths on the upper floor. Two units can accommodate single women; seven units can accommodate a mother and up to three children; two units can accommodate a mother and up to four children. Kitchens, dining area, recreation and living rooms on the first floor are available for common use. The handicapped accessible suite and the staff offices are also located on the first floor.

Miriam's House was designed to end the cycle of homelessness. Miriam’s House serves homeless mothers and their children. Miriam's House is not a shelter because it seeks to be preventative in nature for the children and rehabilitative for the adults. It is hoped that by working a comprehensive program individuals may be empowered to live independently.

Residents are given the time they need to grow and learn in a caring, structured, and developmental environment for up to two years. Each woman is provided with the tools she needs to become self-sufficient. Responsibility and accountability are core elements that are stressed in order to encourage change and to foster personal empowerment. Miriam’s House provides the following services to its adult residents:
